What Fish Toys Should I Buy for My Betta Fish?

Fish toys come in all shapes and sizes, but are just as fun for your fish to play with. As you read on, we'll explain which fish like to play with toys, when fish get bored, which species in particular like playing with toys, where to purchase them, and how to properly entertain (and even bond with) your pet fish. It's important to keep your fish healthy and happy. If your fish become sick or unwell, it is not only inconvenient, but it can also be dangerous. So here's how you can keep your fish happy and healthy:

Betta fish like soft fish toys such as brine shrimp, mini flounder or fruited carp that make clicking noises when squeezed. Guppies like a little harder fish toys such as nymph rock lizards, bloodworms, or brine shrimp. A guppy will even enjoy some squirts of water from a water fountain! Fish in a small tank may enjoy a soft, round sponge ball or a silicone bracelet that makes a "come hither" sound when squeezed. There are several toys specifically designed for guppies or Bettas.

In the last few months, I have seen more guppies (especially neon tetras and black swans) becoming very agitated with a certain type of fish toys. To me, it seems that they are losing interest in playing. The last time I saw this happen, the owner had gone to sell the fish at a pet shop and the previous owner was no longer available. The new owner noticed that the fish were refusing to play with the toys and contacted me. This owner is a very experienced aquarist who has had many guppies over the years, so he was kind enough to share his last set of guppies with me.

I watched as the guppies began to play with the wires, but then quickly realized that they were simply getting too carried away with the playtime. The final thought that passed through my mind as he was giving me the old fish toy was that these fish toys may be contributing to the stress and boredom that the guppies like to live in. He mentioned to me that sometimes it takes a long time for guppies like these to get used to a new tank, substrate, etc. that they might be seeking out the things that they seek out in order to relax themselves. In other words, fish toys that stimulate them might be one of the solutions to these problems.

After much research, I did find a few fish toys that the guppies seem to prefer. One company produces plastic decoration items that look like leaves. These decorations have a "plasticized" appearance that makes the decorations almost "fancy". It is the color of a real leaf, which makes it very attractive to guppies. These decorations are among the best toys that I have found for the betta, and I believe they are among the most effective for stress relief, especially for fish that are extremely active.

Betta fish often have a difficult time relaxing in a standard tank setting. They are used to moving around, climbing, and having many other types of activities. They respond well to toys that will simulate those activities in a confined space. My suggestion is to invest in a few of these toys for your guppy. As the owner of the fish tank, you will want to make sure that the fish tank accessories are healthy and provide the best care for the fish.
